Did you know that nearly a billion people across the world lack adequate access to clean water and proper sanitation? Did you know that 3.5 million people die each year from water-related disease? Did you know that women spend over 200 million hours a year collecting water?
The World Health Organization estimates that every $1 invested in clean water and sanitation returns $3 – $34 in economic growth. Healthy Spaces has chosen Water Africa to receive a portion of our water sales based on the experiences that our family has had visiting Senegal, Zambia and Namibia. We have seen firsthand what the availability of clean water has done for villages who previously did not have access to this most basic of human needs. We have sponsored children through World Vision, traveled with World Vision and have come to trust that this organization strives to keep their overhead rate low. In 2010, 85 percent of their total operating expenses were used for programs that benefit children, families and communities in need. Their effectiveness has earned the trust and support of nearly a million donors, thousands of churches and hundreds of corporations, institutions and government agencies around the globe.
The mission of Abby’s Closet is to inspire confidence and respect in high school women by providing free formal gowns for prom and other memorable events. The Prom Gown Giveaway Events have grown each year since Abby Egland and her mom, Sally started collecting gowns in 2003. To date, Abby’s Closet has given away over 5,000 prom gowns. Healthy Spaces is a drop off center for Abby’s Closet and we participate as volunteers in the Prom Gown Giveaway which takes place in early April each year. The girls who receive a free prom gown often go on to become active in their own schools, organizing dress drives and paying it forward to other girls in their communities.
